Vocabulary Part 3: - Days of the week in Korean

The more you learn vocab the better you get to know Korean. So, in this blog we will learn how to say the days of week in Korean because it is used quite often in daily conversations or if you want to make an appointment with friends, colleagues, etc. or you’re panning a trip you have to make reservation for hotel, tickets, reservation of table in a restaurant and many more things. For these you need to know how to say days of the week in Korean.

Here is the list of days of the week in Korean: -

wol-yo-il (월요일)	Monday
hwa-yo-il (화요일)	Tuesday
su-yo-il (수요일)	Wednesday
mok-yo-il (목요일)	Thursday
geum-yo-il (금요일)	Friday
to-yo-il (토요일)	Saturday
il-yo-il(일요일)	Sunday

 The Meaning of the Days of the Week in Korean: -

Each day has a special meaning in Korean. If you’re quite familiar with Korean words then during your Korean learning journey you may have come across these words. Here is the meaning of days of the week in Korean.

Korean	Meaning
월 (wol)	moon
화 (hwa)	fire
수 (su)	water
목 (mok)	wood
금 (keum)	gold
토 (to)	soil
일 (il)	sun

 

These words have their roots in the Chinese language just like many other Korean words. These names are related to the five elements of nature (Chinese culture), the moon and the sun.

And be careful, these words are not really used on its own. Like if you want to say sun you would say 태양 (the-yang) or 해 (hae) and not 일 (il). I will elaborate about the word sun in another blog.

Extra vocab: -

The word for

--> day: 일(il) and 요일(yo-il).

요일(yo-il) is specifically used to denote the days of the week.

--> Weekday: 평일 (pyeon-gil)

--> Weekdays: 주중 (ju-jung)

--> Weekend: 주말 (ju-mal)

Sample Example: -

àWhat day is today?

Informal - 오늘 무슨 요일이야?

Formal - 오늘 무슨 요일이에요?

àIt’s Thursday?

오늘을 목요일이에요.

Trick to remember: -

I gonna share how I learned this: just remember the ending 요일 for every day then remain the first word, for that I continuously wrote that on a paper while pronouncing until I remember it. Trust me, this won’t take long. And after whenever you come across words like Monday, Friday, etc do try to say it or remember in your mind.
