What is hangul?
Hangul, the Korean alphabet is also known as Hanguel (한글) in South Korea and Chosŏn'gŭl (조선글) in North Korea. This is the official writing system of both North Korea and South Korea. The Korean alphabet Hangul was created by Sejong the Great in 1443 and he was the fourth king of the Josoen Dynasty. The writing system was made the official writing system of Korea in 1446.
Besides
that, Koreans also celebrate Hangul Day. It might seem a bit strange to you but
to know the reason you have to read the history behind it and you will see why
it is so important to Korean culture. In South Korea hangul day is celebrated on
9th October whereas in North Korea it is celebrated on 15th January.
The Korean Alphabets: -
As like
most of the languages it is also a combination of consonants and vowels. There
are 14 vowels, 10 consonants, 5 double consonants, 4 strong consonants and 7
diphthongs.
Vowels: -
ㅏ = ah (after) ㅑ = ya
ㅗ = oh (old) ㅛ = yo
ㅓ = eo ㅕ=
yoh
ㅜ = uu (glue)
ㅠ = yu (you)
ㅔ = eh (egg) ㅐ = eh (egg)
ㅖ = yeh ㅒ= yeh
ㅡ = uh (good) ㅣ= ee (tree)
Focus on the sound of the underlined words.
Consonants: -
ㄱ= k/g ㄴ=
n
ㄷ=t/d
ㄹ=
r/l
ㅁ=
m ㅂ= p/b
ㅅ
= s ㅈ=
Jh
ㅇ=
ng (only at end) ㅎ= h
ㅇ= No sound if at beginning
Double Consonant: -
ㄲ=kah
ㄸ=tah
ㅃ=pah
ㅆ=sah
ㅉ=ceh
Strong Consonants: -
ㅋ=kha
ㅌ=tha
ㅍ=pha
ㅊ=cha
Diphthongs: -
Combination of two vowels in a single
syllable.
외 = vae 와 = vah
왜
= vae 위 = vi
워
= vau 웨 = vae
의 = ooi
That’s it for the Hangul.
Memorize it, it won’t take that much
time. And be familiar with the stroke order of these alphabets.
