Is it okay to use laptop while charging? Should I leave my laptop plugged in all the time? Using laptop while charging is Good or Bad? These are one of the most common questions every laptop owner has and also one of the most debated question without any certain answer.
Let’s find out what is best for our laptops.
You might have heard from a friend or family member on how you should never leave your devices plugged in after they get fully charged. Well let me tell you, a lithium-based battery cannot be overcharged even if you leave it plugged in as soon as it is fully charged, the internal circuit prevents further charging unless these is a drop in voltage.
When you are plugged in, your laptop is directly powered by the A/C adapter, not the battery; only excess power goes to the battery. Also, the battery is not in a state of continuous charging whenever you are plugged in; rather it gets topped off whenever the charge level drops below 95%. Since the battery is not being used while plugged in, it can take several hours for it to naturally lose that 5% without an active drain.
So yes, it’s okay to use a laptop while it’s charging but not all the time.
Things to avoid
- You should avoid leaving your laptop plugged in and charging all the time to avoid battery degradation.
- If you regularly let the battery dip into the red zone then fully recharge it, the battery will degrade more quickly.
- High temperatures can also have a negative impact on laptop battery. Without any doubt temperature higher than 30C will damage your laptop battery internals. Temperature also increases when you leave your laptop plugged in all the time, leaving it or working somewhere in hot temperature like in a closed hot car or working outside on a hot sunny day etc.
So, if you have any of these habits, it’s best if you stop doing that.
